Lady Gaga’s… “Unique” Performance on Friday Night Live With Jonothan Ross

Gagas new single Love Game

Gaga's new single "Love Game"

If you are a regular on the Just Add Water Modern Music Blog, then you will certainly know that I have had mostly enourmous praise for her. In the review of her album “The Fame”, I pointed out that the songs “Again Again” and “Brown Eyes” were like commercial breaks, where she’s certainly lost the plot and blindly sung her way into a tangent of irrelavence.

There have been a few occasions where Lady Gaga has misunderstood the whole idea of being a
mystical” and “multidimensional” artist, she has deviated in her performances especially this one, which was preceded by an equally awkward interview on Friday Night Live with Jonothan Ross (A popular “Late” show in Britain)

Her performance was ridiculous and went from being sort of innovative too unbelieveably scary, and not in a theatrical way. She performed “Poker Face”, or should I say “Slaughtered” it, she sounded out of breath and like an overexcited nasal Japanese Businessman who had drunk way too much rice wine.

There was a distinct lack of actual singing in the performance, it was mostly talking, and by no means am I commenting on her ability to sing, which she definetly has.  She tried to make it some kind of Metal interpretation of Poker Face, there was no rhythm to the performance, she seriously butchered it, it was like she was having some kind of epileptic fit. Nobody wants to see this, and what Lady Gaga might not understand is, this is a huge mistake, she always appears borderline wasted, especially the way she does her eye makeup, which would be ok if her eyes didn’t appear to be rolling into the back of her head while she screeches (yes… screeches) whilst innocently misplacing the lyrics as if they were an annoying child in a supermarket that you had almost given up on.

Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape Anybody?

Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape Anybody?

This performance was uncomforting for a fan to watch, as well as for regular viewers, only the most diehard fan could come up with some excuse for this seemingly drug induced trip she did on stage, like “It’s her way of expressing…. (insert lame reason here).

She has definetly tipped over the limit of being able to justify her prententious nature, especially when claiming she gets her inspiration from nobody? Who can seriously say that, how egotistical, I’m sure any person with any idea of any facet of pop culture in the last 40 years would be able to conjure up some undeniable similarities in her look and sound, on of the biggest would be Gwen Stefani.

Lady Gaga is a spectacular performer, and she needs to understand that she is no longer in a dingey nightclub in New York, the majority of her audience has shifted from people either inebriated, on drugs (or a combination of the two) to a diverse range of age groups from 8 onwards.

What she needs to accept is that she can no longer put on a drag show when she feels like it, she needs to step up her game and express herself without becoming deluded as to the reaction from the general public.

Perhaps she has just become engulfed by a whirlwind fame (and who could blame her!) but either way she has talent, and she should stop trying to be the “Lady” (no pun intended) who always tries to give a surprise to her audience, because more often than not they turn out to be unpleasant ones. She should instead grasp the oppourtunity which the stage and the microphone offer her to not treat the audience like they don’t exist, but to give a coherent performance. She is at the crossroads in her blossoming career where she can either take the route of a talented and succesful artist, or to simply fall into the abyss of self-obsession.

New Music First – Natalie Bassingthwaighte “In His Eyes”

Natalie, from her GQ photoshoot

Ok, thankfully Natalie performed an acoustic set of six songs at the Australian Open, congrats Serena, and Nadal, sad that Federer didn’t win, but he wasn’t as focussed as Nadal was. Anyway enough of that crap, this is a very touching song, called “In His Eyes” which Natalie explained before playing it that it relates to her grandmother unable to adapt to life after her grandpa died, and that the magnitude of the event and it’s aftermath was intense and emotionally complex for Natalie herself, as she used to spend a lot of time with them, camping around Australia, a yearly tradition which crumbled to pieces upon the tradgedy of his death.

You won’t be able to see it in this video since she’s wearing sunglasses (fair enough, it was 44 degrees…) but when she performed live at the Toff In Town, she openly shed a few tears, it was so touching to see somebody so passionate about their music and not their image. Throughout the performance tears kept coming, and I’m not surprised, for such an emotional song it’s just so beautiful, uplifting, introspective, and inspirational at the same time, it sounds alot like Cindy Lauper’s “True Colours” and this is no exaggeration, this song could be an incredible hit, either way I’m sure it will stay in the minds of many fans who can relate to dealing with the tradgedy of death and the long hard road of grieving that many are unable to conquer alone.

Make no mistake, this is a true hit in the making

I give this song 4 and a half stars, in one word, beautiful.

Performance Review – Natalie Bassingthwaighte Live and Intimate

After seeing Natalie Bassingthwaighte preview some new tracks from the upcoming album 1000 Stars, I could only stand in awe at the quality of her vocals and the overwhelming consistency of hits that seem to be coming from her new album. At the beggining of the performance, she described her hesitation at wanting to record her solo album, but this all changed at one of her final Rogue Trader’s concert’s where the energy inspired her to travel down the road and pursue her dreams of solo stardom, at the beginning of 2008 Natalie began to record the album 1000 Stars.

She played 9 new songs from her upcoming album, but did not perform any of the more dance orientated music, which was played before and after her performance, and let me tell you, it sounded great, and it looks like this album has alot of potential singles in it.

Overall the standout track was the inspirational “1000 Stars” the title track, which will inevitably be the most succesful song from her album, unless the dance tracks are incredible (which is likely). Here is a fairly low quality snippet from Natalie Performing 1000 Stars, for a higher quality version navigate to youtube and it will have the option underneath the video.

From the sound of it, Natalie Bassingthwaighte is going to be the next Kylie Minogue, just with more singing talent, and that should be exciting to see her get the worldwide success she deserves.

Performance Review – Lady Gaga “Just Dance” On Ellen

Hey guys i was slouching in front of the telly when I switched to Ellen and noticed this performance. All I can say is, wow, she has come a long way from her “So You Think You Can Dance” performance, where I seriously just assumed she was a drag queen who didn’t sound at all like her records. However, she does sing live in this performance and does so well, she adds a personality to this song, and seems to be following in Gwen Stefanis footsteps by creating visually enticing, theatrical performances that have continuity from the videos to to the performance.

For examples her outfit alludes to the wierd mask she wore in “Poker Face” and it demonstates how she has her own designated style. Also she is not drop dead gorgeous, but she plays the platinum blonde bombshell role with originality and moves as if she is, which is all there is to it really.

At first I shrugged her off as a one hit wonder, then I heard her album, then Poker Face went number 1 in Australia and I fell in love with the whole album. Her originality is just what we need right now, with Gwen Stefani on  hiatus Lady Gaga can pick us up from when she left off on “Sweet Escape” and take us deep into her surreal electro world in which she declares “Pop Music Will Never Be Low Brow”.

Fantastic performance and I can’t wait to see perhaps Papparazi and Poker Face live, Summer Boy would be a fantastic song to show off her vocals.

Britney Spears Circus and Womanizer On GMA

Britney Spears has, over the last week, completed a string of performances of her singles Womanizer and Circus, from Germany, to Paris, to London, and Times Square. Check the performance of Circus and Womanizer on GMA below.

The American Performance on Good Morning America, at 8am on her 27th  birthday is fantastic. However she still seems sluggish in parts, but simultaneously she kicks ass in many parts. I believe they’re giving her easy choreography since she’s just getting back into it. The Dance breaks in Circus and Womanizer are phenomenal, however there is a little too much walking.

Overall I think her performances are ok keeping in mind the European ones, yet whilst she lacks the speed and sharpness that she had in her performances in 2003 with Toxic and In The Zone, I think she’s on the way back to that calibur of performing. In the meantime I just noticed Circus is number 1 in US and Australia Itunes, with Circus The single charting at #1 already?? Shattered Glass also went to #9?? This album could do better than I thought. I predicted about sales of 450,000 to 500,000 in the US and possibly 38,000 in AUS, now I’m just not sure. What do you predict?
